Barley is a member of annual grass family, its height depend on its kind can be one meter high, and its leaves can alternatively be narrow and long in dark green.
Barley is being planted in Gilan, Azerbaijan, Isfahan, Khuzestan and etc. or in better word all around Iran.
Hippocrates, father of modern medicine in west, used to use barley as a drug for curing acute disease. So it looks like picking barley up between cereals is a right choice. Barley herbal tea is known as “Hippocrates tea” yet. Recent experiences in medicine have shown that barley’s compounds have remedial effects. Barley also improve and facilitate the natural treatment.
Types of barley:
There are 3 kinds of barley due to their response to temperature:
Spring type is sensitive to cold so it’s being planted in spring. Autumn type that is being planted in autumn don’t grow ear till spring. The intermediate type has less resistance to cold and is being planted in tropical regions in both spring and autumn.
Barley has different usage. A large amount of barley uses as foods for animals. Barley’s nutritional value is 5 percent less than corn because of its internal and external sheath. Of course today scientists are trying to make kinds of barley with more protein and Necessary amino acids specially lysine with the help of Eugenic.
Barley also uses for baking bread and making soups. In some children foods, barley is used, too. Some peel the barley or half-thresh it and then use it to make soups.
Top barley producer countries:
In 2007, 136207 thousand ton barley had been produced and in this year 101 countries in all around the world planted barley. 5 top barley producer countries are Russia, Canada, Spain, Germany and France with the amount of 15663, 11822, 11684, 11034 and 9472 thousand ton barley, and they have 43.8 % of world’s production. The most proceeds per surface in producing barley in our region in 2007 had belonged to Saudi Arabia with the amount of 6267 kg per hectare. And after Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Azerbaijan and Turkey are ranked from second to fifth place with 2941, 2833, 2349 and 2062 kg per hectare. Iran’s proceeds per surface is 3170 kg per hectare for irrigated barley and 1165 kg per hectare for dry farmed barley.
